Ambassador Carwile Farewell Message

Ambassador Carwile Public Farewell Message
Riga, January 27, 2023

This weekend, I conclude my term as U.S. Ambassador to Latvia.  It is time for Karin and me to say goodbye.

My service in Latvia has been a tremendous honor.  Over the last three years, the United States and Latvia were tested by a global pandemic and by Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.  But our shared commitment to freedom and democratic values deepened our bond in the face of these challenges.  Our relationship is stronger than ever.

I have been proud to lead our Embassy team – both American and Latvian – and I am grateful for their dedication, professionalism, and accomplishments.  Likewise, I greatly  appreciate the Latvian government’s support for the United States and to deepening our bilateral relations.

Finally, I am grateful to you, the people of Latvia.  I admire your passion for your culture, your history, and your nation.  Thank you for sharing this passion with us.  Karin and I will always carry Latvia in our hearts.

I depart confident that the United States and Latvia will remain committed to defending each other; to further strengthening our security; and to protecting our democratic institutions and the rule of law.  We begin our second century of diplomatic relations as allies and true friends, standing side-by-side and ready to confront the challenges ahead.

Paldies, Latvija!
