Riga, May 29, 2014 – On May 30, 2014, 70 American soldiers and engineers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed in Adaži, together with members of the U.S. Embassy community, will volunteer at Zvannieki foster home to chop and bring in firewood, dig several water trenches, and lay a concrete foundation for a new poultry barn. Zvannieki, an alternative family home for Latvian children from impoverished and abusive backgrounds, is run by volunteers who work to reestablish the feeling of home, family, and security for its 30 residents. To meet its winter heating needs, Zvannieki home depends on donations of firewood from neighboring homes or the collection of large amounts of wood for by the older children. The U.S. military support will provide much needed assistance to this alternative family home.
The Malkas Talka starts on Friday, May 30 at 10:00 a.m. Address: “Vecrogas” Vaives parish, Cesis region, foster home Zvannieki.
