USS Oscar Austin visits Riga in display of Latvia-United States cooperation

Riga, June 27, 2014 – On Saturday, June 28, the guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) is scheduled to arrive in Riga, Latvia for a scheduled port visit as part of an ongoing effort by U.S. military forces to strengthen ties with NATO allies and regional partners, while working towards mutual goals of promoting peace and stability in the Baltic region.

Media are invited to cover two events during the USS Oscar Austin’s port visit:

  • On Sunday, June 29 at 1 p.m., sailors from the USS Oscar Austin are scheduled to participate in an outreach project at the Children’s University Hospital in Riga. 20 members of Oscar Austin’s crew will clear and organize a defunct warehouse of its stored contents. Sailors will also visit with young patients at the Children’s Hospital. Media representatives are invited to contact the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs staff to learn more about the exact location of the project on the Hospital’s campus.
  • On Sunday, June 29, at 3 p.m. the U.S. Sixth Fleet Quintet will play a free concert for the public at the Esplanade in Riga. The musicians will play a wide range of pieces for the audience’s enjoyment. Media representatives are invited to contact the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs staff to learn more about the performance.
